Second Kendal Brownies
(reproduced from the Church Magazine June 2000)
My involvement with the Pack began long ago in 1988 when I decided I wanted to do something positive and helpful in the community. I have been there ever since and had such a lot of fun.
Many Brownies have passed through over the years and the hope is that they find it an enjoyable experience.
The emphasis is on fun as well as following a programme that takes the Brownies from enrolment, usually at the age of seven, to the time they leave us to pursue other interests, at the age of ten.
At enrolment, with the aid of a toadstool and pond (not a real one!) the Brownies make their Promise and are officially welcomed into the Pack.
Once enrolled, the Brownies begin the first of three journeys:
Footpath, Road and Highway, which consist of eight challenges for each, and last till the Brownies leave.
Interest badges give the Brownies a chance to 'have a go alone' with certain activities, such as swimming or pony-rider badge. We also complete badges as a group, such as First Aid where we had three visits from the Red Cross.
Every term we try to include some 'treats' which have included visits from The Mayor and Mayoress with a return visit to their Parlour, district nurse, vet, dentist, and police dog handler. The Brownies also enjoy taking part in all aspects of the church services.
As a district we take part in the annual Thinking Day celebrations, swimming gala and quiz. I think we are probably one of the loudest Packs for cheering and giving encouragement!
I hope this has given you an interesting insight into our Brownie pack. I would recommend the supervisor's 'job' to anyone because the smiles, enjoyment and satisfaction you get is so very worthwhile.
