Diocese of Carlisle
Partnerships in World Mission

Carlisle Diocese has mission partnerships with the people in the Church of God in Zululand, in Northern Argentina, in Stavanger, Norway and with the Diocese of Madras, South India.

Our commitment to the Diocese of Madras goes back almost twenty years and during that time friendships have grown as people have got to know one another and celebrate together the oneness of Christ. Visits which help to strengthen the partnership and ministry between the dioceses are made on a regular basis. The next visit to India from Carlisle will be in January 2003.

The Madras Diocese, a member of the Church of South India, supports a number of primary and secondary schools, schools for children with various kinds of disabilities, boarding houses, training institutions, hospitals and old people's homes. From time to time Carlisle Diocese has contributed to the rebuilding and refurbishment of premises where this is necessary. For example Northwick Hostel attached to Northwick Girls' School in the suburbs of Madras was recently renovated and Carlisle Diocese made a conribution to the cost.

The Madras Diocese now wishes to increase the number of girls accommodated at the centre by finding sufficient finance to cover the cost of more places.

Carlisle Diocese has agreed to raise support for this project on the understanding that it will be co-funded by the Madras Diocese.

Northwick Hostel This link page describes life and living conditions in Northwick Hostel during a visit made in January 2001 and explains why girls' education is so important in India particularly for families living in rural communities.

If you would like to contribute to the fund, donations as cheques, can be made payable to: Carlisle Diocesan Board of Finance and sent to The Diocesan Office via Mrs L Tembey, Holme Cultram Vicarage, Abbeytown, Wigton CA7 4SP
