Organ Recitals May – July 2017

Following our successful run of organ recitals we are pleased to announce a third series on Fridays in May, June and July 2017.

Concerts are held from 12.30pm – 1.15pm.

Following on from each 12.30pm concert, we now run an additional half-hour programme of piano and organ music from 2pm.  We are delighted to welcome some friends with learning difficulties to these short concerts, as well as others who stay on from the earlier recital.  For the second concert we don’t request silence, but instead enjoy varied participation from the audience.

May 19Ann Bond is organist of Carnforth Parish church. She was music lecturer and University Organist at Manchester University.  She is a well known continuo player and author of an acclaimed textbook on the harpsichord.

June 2Jack Stone is a rising star and currently organ scholar at Carlisle Cathedral.

June 16 – Charles Edmondson, a former music advisor and conductor in Humberside, cathedral recitalist, and sought after accompanist.

June 30 – Andy Plowman, Organist of Kendal Parish Church, accompanist and supply cathedral organist across the UK.

July 14 – Ian Pattinson is a well known recitalist and accompanist.  He was Assistant Organist at Blackburn Cathedral prior to 2001, since when he has been organist of Lancaster Priory.  His concert will include an organ duet (with Andy Plowman on the church’s Bevington organ) composed by Francis Jackson, legendary past organist of York Minister, who celebrates his 100th birthday this year.

July 28 – Jonathan Bielby, organist emeritus of Wakefield Cathedral and now a member of the congregation at Kendal Parish Church.

Admission is free, but there will be a retiring collection and donations are welcomed towards the Organ Restoration Fund.

A little bit about the organ

The church has two organs, and the main organ was originally built in 1877 by Willis. During its last rebuild 1969, the organ was placed on a gallery beneath the west tower. A large and complex machine of wood, metal and leather, with thousands of moving parts, it has more than 2,300 pipes and weighs in at an impressive 12 tons.

After nearly 50 years of regular use, and water damage particularly after the terrible weather of late 2015, the organ now needs a major rebuild. Donations from the concerts with go towards this work.
